Farm Advisor

Boyne Rivers Trust (BRT) is an environmental charity to the conservation and protection of the Boyne River catchment. The vision of the Trust is for a Thriving River Catchment, valued and protected by its communities’. The aim of the trust is to protect, enhance and restore the water bodies of the Boyne catchment through community-led projects and activities. Job Summary The Farm Advisor will work with farmers, across the Boyne catchment, to identify potential changes in agricultural and land management practices, intended to bring about improved water quality and freshwater habitats at a catchment-scale, whilst also benefiting farm businesses. The post-holder will undertake one-to-one farm visits, working with landowners to identify ways to reduce the risk and impact of diffuse and point-source water pollution from agriculture. This will be done through non-regulatory farmyard and field assessments to identify possible water protection measures and the production of bespoke farm water management plans. The Farm Advisor will also aim to raise awareness, improve understanding and acceptance amongst farmers and land managers of diffuse and point-source pollution from agriculture and its impact on water quality and the wider water environment. Engagement with farmers in the Boyne catchment will seek to create, through a voluntary approach, a sense of ownership and achievement within the farming community in relation to improving water quality and water dependent species and habitats in the catchments across the Boyne Rivers Trust’s operational area. The South East Rivers Trust is an environmental charity bringing rivers and their catchments back to life. Working in 12 river catchments across the south east of England, the Trust connects communities and mobilises citizen scientists to educate and engage people on the importance of rivers, and supports and challenges stakeholders, businesses and individuals to protect them. The Project Officer role is suitable for an experienced and knowledgeable individual to build on their existing skills, overseeing all stages of river and catchment enhancement projects; from conception to development, design and physical implementation. You can have practical impact and influence on the natural environment creating sustainable and healthy rivers for the future. The Role Whilst this role will predominantly be in the East of the region, you will need to be prepared to work all over the South East should the need arise. River enhancement projects will typically include weir removals, fish passage easements (such as rock ramps, nature-like bypasses or technical fish passes) and river re-naturalisation projects (such as habitat enhancements, reconnecting floodplains & palaeochannels, re-meandering, and backwater creation). Catchment management projects are likely to include wetland creation, Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) and Natural Flood Management (NFM) measures. We would be interested to know about any experience you have in the above fields when you apply. Using your freshwater expertise and proven ability, you will proactively lead on smaller and medium scale projects while working closely with other staff, external partners and stakeholders. The role This role is a vital part of the Trust’s work, as engaging with farmers and land managers is essential to improving and protecting our rivers and enhancing their resilience to climate change. We’re offering an exciting opportunity for a candidate with experience in agriculture and/​or land management who is passionate about making a real difference to water quality and river habitats. The post-holder will work to raise awareness and improve understanding of diffuse and point source agricultural pollution and its impact on water quality and the wider environment. Through the formation of new farming clusters and the provision of tailored advice and support, the role aims to promote voluntary, community-led improvements in farming practices that benefit the water environment. While the initial contract for this role is for 18 months, there is potential for the position to be extended beyond this period. Project Manager — River Enhancement (Fish Passage)

Background Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust (YDRT) is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of rivers and their catchments within the YDRT catchment area. We work collaboratively with local communities and action groups, national parks, and various environmental organisations to deliver impactful projects that restore our rivers, enhance biodiversity, improve water quality, and increase resilience to climate change. The role We’re offering an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Project Manager, where you’ll play a pivotal role in restoring Yorkshire’s rivers by removing barriers to fish passage. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the water environment and bring practical experience in river restoration, particularly in the removal of fish passage barriers and contractor management. You’ll be working within the Great Yorkshire Rivers partnership, a collaborative initiative between Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency, and The Rivers Trust. The partnership’s vision is: By 2043, this leading and innovative partnership will have addressed all artificial barriers negatively impacting fish populations in Yorkshire, allowing recovery of our native fish species and helping rivers and their communities to thrive.” Yorkshire Water has committed £7.3 million to addressing barriers across the region between 2025 and 2030. During the first few months you will develop a strategy for removing barriers in our catchments, prioritising weirs and other barriers for removal or modification, conducting walkovers to ground truth priority areas, as well as identifying and delivering any quick wins’ As the project progresses, you will be optioneering and designing barrier removal or mitigation measures and securing funding for their delivery. Partnership working is a fundamental part of working at YDRT; the Project Manager will collaborate closely with a range of organisations including the Environment Agency (EA), Yorkshire Water, landowners, Yorkshire Dales National Parks Authority and Nidderdale National Landscapes. The candidate will be comfortable talking to a range of people which may include farmers and other landowners, specialist groups, volunteers, governmental organisations and other environmental practitioners and will be able to explain complex technical data to non-practitioners.
